“The Colorblind Photographer.”
Being color-blind has defined nearly every aspect of my photographic life. I matriculated at an extremely strict school, and while in Kindergarten - I was the only student who ever had homework. While never explained to me in a way that made sense, my coloring work was always rejected for one reason or another. It sounds absurd to not let a child color and paint how they see the world rather than how everyone else does. But alas, my journey began.
Overtime, an aversion to color grew and I avoided the subject all together, hating any and all art classes at that particular school. The result was that I never properly learned my colors. While I could be upset about the lack of encouragement, it has become the ultimate blessing.
My brain doesn’t prioritize thinking in colors. I think in details. If I needed to identify someone in a crowd, I couldn’t rely on whatever my color sense was, so I relied on “feeling” and personality. Paired with my quiet nature I watched and assessed everyone around me. I had to pick up on intimate details to be able to describe a person. This one aspect alone granted me one of my absolute greatest strengths in filmmaking and photography - sensitivity and endless curiosity about whomever is in front of me.
